Summit Imperial Pumpkin Porter

I first had a non traditional pumpkin beer this last fall at the GABF. It was a pumpkin stout from Elysian Brewing out of Seattle, yeah I know, not the Midwest, but hella good. It was so good, that I remembered it throughout the whole fest. And though I love pumpkin beer, I really looked forward to finding some from the Midwest, and now we have! Thank you Summit! This stuff is good! It’s the fifth in their “Unchained Series” which is their brewmaster’s special releases, it’s brewed with traditional spices and locally raised pumpkins.

First thing you notice when you pop open the bottle is the aroma, you definitely smell the spices and pumpkin. This stuff pours chocolate black, with a dark copper brown head. This full bodied beer is smooth and rich with spices and a touch of pumpkin. The nice It has a sweet finish that lingers long enough to satisfy. It’s good, but not great, but why? I really can’t determine. It has really good flavor, a good finish, it’s well balanced, doesn’t overwhelm, but is memorable. It has a roasty start, and sweet finish. Maybe because I was so blown away by the one I had at the GABF. I want more, but at some other time.

I definitely recommend this beer. I do wish I had the opportunity to try the dry hopped version that was mentioned on the site. Summit makes good stuff and this one doesn’t disappoint.
